10 Great Things to Do in Wellington NZ this Summer
1. Te Papa Museum:
Te Papa is New Zealand's National Museum and is a must-see for anyone visiting Wellington. It is Free entry for New Zealanders, but international visitors pay, to explore interactive displays of New Zealand's history, culture, animal life and environment. There is also paid feature collections to visit if you wish; these are advertised on the Te Papa website. The museum has a gift shop, cafe, and a viewing deck with panoramic views of Wellington Harbour.
2. Wellington Waterfront and Harbour:
The Wellington Waterfront is a vibrant place in the summer, central to the city, and perfect to walk and enjoy the scenic views of the harbour, artworks and sculptures to admire, and plenty of cafes and ice cream spots along the way. Maybe even hire a kayak or book a harbour cruise.
3. Weta Workshop Tour:
Weta Workshop is a world-renowned special effects and prop company. Their guided tours allow visitors to see the behind-the-scenes magic that goes into creating films like 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit.' You can book direct via Weta Workshop, and if you are staying in the city the Guided Transfers & Tour is the best idea, with the added bonus of a tour commentary from the city to Weta Workshop.
4. Ride the Wellington Cable Car:
The Wellington Cable Car is an iconic experience that offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Once you reach the top, visit the Cable Car Museum and gift shop, then explore the beautiful Botanic Garden. You can walk back down to the city through the Botanic Garden toward the Beehive, which takes approximately 40 minutes, or take the Cable Car back down. A trip on the Cable Car is just NZD$12 return, or $6.50 one way, and the Cable Car terminal is at Lambton Quay CBD (signposted with a cable car sign).
5. Space Place:
Space Place at Carter Observatory is situated by the Cable Car Museum, a quick cable car ride from Lambton Quay. It features planetarium shows, telescope viewings, interactive galleries and multimedia exhibits, a must to learn the history of the New Zealand skies. Discount available if you book with your Cable Car ticket.
6. Zealandia:
Zealandia is an eco-sanctuary in central Wellington, dedicated to conserving New Zealand's native wildlife. You can hike through its beautiful trails and see a variety of unique species in their natural habitat. Getting there is a 30-minute walk from the top of the Cable Car or catch the free electric shuttle from Wellington i-Site or at the top of the Cable Car.
7. Wellington Zoo:
Wellington Zoo is a delightful experience for animal lovers. The zoo is home to a diverse array of animals, including native New Zealand wildlife and exotic species from around the globe. You can stroll at your own pace, or maybe take part in a close encounter with meerkats, giraffes, or snow leopards. The zoo is dedicated to conservation and education, offering engaging talks and interactive exhibits that inspire a love for wildlife. Wellington Zoo is in Newtown, 10 minutes from the city.
8. Guided Tour of Parliament Building & Beehive:
Take a guided tour of New Zealand's Parliament Building. The Introduction to Parliament Tour is a 60-minute very informative guided tour of Wellington's Parliament Building and Beehive, and there are other tours available as well. You must book ahead online and arrive 15 minutes before as you will go through normal security.
9. Mt Victoria Lookout Walkway:
The Mt Victoria Lookout walkway offers a rewarding hike with stunning panoramic views of the city, harbour, and surrounding hills. The well-marked trail winds through lush greenery and is accessible for all fitness levels. At the summit, visitors can relax and take in the breathtaking scenery, making for a perfect photo opportunity. This scenic walk is a must-do for anyone looking to experience Wellington’s natural beauty.
10. Relax at Oriental Bay:
Oriental Bay is Wellington's most famous beach, perfect for a summer day out. Enjoy swimming, a walk along the beach, or simply take a stroll along the promenade where there are plenty of nearby cafes and restaurants.
