6. Day Trip to Milford Sound from Queenstown
Magnificent Milford Sound, one of New Zealand's most stunning natural wonders, is a must-visit. Driving there is an option, but we chose an all-inclusive bus tour from Queenstown central which also provided a commentary of the interesting history along the way. Once there, enjoy a scenic cruise, take in the magnificent coastline, waterfalls, seals bathing on the rocks, dolphins diving, and maybe even spot some penguins. There are also plenty of other activities including kayaking or guided nature walks.
7. Gibbston Valley Winery Bike Tour
Explore Gibbston Valley on a bike - This region offers a variety of vineyards, each with unique wines like Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay. Notable stops include Gibbston Valley Winery, Peregrine Wines, and Chard Farm. Enjoy guided tours, learn about winemaking, and taste and savour the flavours.
Shuttle from Queenstown to Arrowtown and take a bike tour (or self-guided bike ride) to Gibbston Valley. Be sure to book in advance as these popular bike tours can sell out in the busy summer months.
8. Arrowtown, Historic Gold Mining Town
Arrowtown is a historic gold mining town by the Arrow River, near Queenstown which is rich in heritage and natural beauty. Step back in time and stroll up the main street lined with historic miners’ cottages, explore local boutiques, discover the history, and enjoy Arrowtown’s sophisticated food scene. Definitely visit the partially restored Arrowtown Chinese Settlement, a tribute to the roughs and riches of the gold rush days of 1860s Otago. Arrowtown is definitely worth a visit while you are in Queenstown. You can even try your hand at a bit of gold panning!
